There’s rarely a worse feeling than opening your Gallery app to discover that a treasured photo you’ve been saving has vanished. Whether you deleted it by accident or something happened to your phone and your photos are gone, Android provides us with several options for saving and recovering photos.
We’ll show you how to recover deleted photos in this article. Unfortunately, there are times when your photos are lost forever, but these are extremely rare.
Have You Checked the Trash Folder?
The first thing you should do is go through your Trash folder. When you delete a photo from your phone’s gallery, it is saved for 30 days in the trash folder. So, assuming you recently deleted the image, it should still be there.
Here’s how to get to your trash folder:
- Open your phone’s Gallery app and tap on the three vertical lines in the lower right-hand corner.
The Trash option may appear under the three vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner depending on the Android version you’re using. - Select ‘Trash.’
- This is where you should look for any missing photos.
- If they do, simply tap on the restore icon in the lower left-hand corner to recover them.
How to Recover Deleted Android Photos
If you deleted photos and want them back, look in your trash to see if it’s still there.
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Library, then Trash at the bottom.
- Hold the photo or video you want to restore in your hand.
- Tap Restore at the bottom. The photo or video will be returned:

It was in all of the albums that it was in. - If the item is not in your trash, it may be deleted permanently.
Hopefully, you’ve recovered your lost images by this point. But, take it from the experts: recovering deleted files can sometimes require some ingenuity.
