Zoom has quickly become one of the most popular conference tools in the world, allowing businesses and groups to easily schedule and join meetings. However, the default Zoom recording capabilities leave much to be desired and frequently suffer in quality as it tries to keep the live streaming side operational. As a result, many users turn to third-party recording programs to improve recording quality and Zoom’s capabilities.
What is OBS?
OBS Studio is cross-platform screencasting and streaming application that is free and open source. It’s compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSDs. The Open Collective and Patreon benefit from the OBS project.
OBS Studio includes a robust API that allows plugins and scripts to provide additional customization and functionality tailored to your needs. For high-performance integrations, use native plugins or Lua or Python scripts that interface with existing sources.
Who is OBS Developer?
OBS Studio is a free and open-source software program licensed under the GPLv2. That is, if you create a plugin for OBS Studio or a modified version of OBS Studio and distribute it in binary form, you must provide users with a way to access the binary’s source code. You will violate the license if you do not. The simplest way to accomplish this is to create a public Github repository for your fork or plugin and include a text file with a link to the repo in your binary download. Section 3 of the GPLv2 contains the relevant portion of the license.
Why Record Zoom Using OBS?
Native video recording is one of Zoom’s most popular features. Users of Zoom can record meetings to their PC or to the Zoom cloud. If you record to the Zoom cloud, you can even get separate files for gallery view and full-sized speaker view. However, many people use other options, such as OBS, to record video meetings.
Why use another piece of software when Zoom allows you to record? There are a few minor advantages. OBS, for example, supports recording into various video formats. The main reason you might want to learn how to record Zoom meetings using OBS is that the software can help businesses get a head start on video production.
How To Record Zoom Using OBS
Here are the steps of How To Record Zoom Using OBS for you to read and follow. Follow the provided steps carefully.
- Start Zoom and OBS.
- Click the + icon under Sources in OBS and then select Display Capture. This works best if you have multiple monitors for your PC, but it will still work if you only have one.
You can try using Window Capture and selecting Zoom.exe as your source, but this may not always work. - Give the capture any name you want, then click OK. To keep things simple, use the name of the monitor you’re using for Zoom.
- Select the monitor to which the video will be displayed from the dropdown menu. The current feed of the monitor will be displayed in the preview.
- Remove the check mark from the Capture Cursor box.
- When you’re satisfied with your selection, click OK. The current monitor feed is now displayed in your OBS. If OBS is also running on that monitor, you should see cascading previews.
You must now include the audio from you (the microphone) and the participants (the computer audio). - Click + under Sources again in OBS, then select Audio Input Capture.
- If you want to keep the capture source separate from the other source and avoid confusion, rename it, then press OK.
- Choose your input device from the dropdown menu, then click OK. In the Audio Mixer screen, below the video preview, you’ll notice a new audio input displaying the microphone capture.
- By clicking + and selecting Audio Output Capture, you can add another source.
- If you want, rename the source, then click OK.
- Select an output device from the list. We recommend using headphones to avoid doubling sounds. When you press OK, the second line in the Audio Mixer section will appear.
- Start recording, or Start streaming if you need to stream the conference somewhere else.
- Set Zoom to full-screen mode to make it the only visible program on the screen.
- Return Zoom to windowed mode and select Stop Recording when you’re finished recording.
There will be a brief period in the video when Zoom is not in full-screen mode, and the cascading preview will appear if the OBS is on the same display. If necessary, you can remove it in post-production.
If you use speakers, the sound in the recording will be doubled because your microphone will pick up the output sound from your device. To avoid this, wear headphones.
You can get higher-resolution video and audio when you use OBS to record and control your Zoom meetings. While Zoom is an excellent live meeting platform, the benefits of using OBS far outweigh the costs of setting up the system. Play around with the settings to get the best results for you.
